Music mogul Anthony Wilson battling cancer

Music entrepreneur Anthony Wilson has revealed he is battling against kidney cancer.

The 56-year-old said he was surprised but not too upset and saw it as “another step in life’s adventure”.

Mr Wilson, who managed Manchester bands Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays, underwent emergency surgery last month to remove a kidney. He is awaiting a course of chemotherapy due to start next week at Manchester’s Christie Hospital.

The impresario launched the influential Factory Records label in 1978 and was also co-founder of The Hacienda nightclub. Both featured in the semi-fictional account of the “Madchester” Music scene as told in the 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, which starred comedian Steve Coogan as Mr Wilson.

The cancer was discovered when he visited his GP before Christmas after feeling unwell for two months. Two minutes into his check-up and the doctor found something was “seriously wrong” with his right lung. His lung was drained and a scan revealed his right kidney was “completely consumed” by cancer, Mr Wilson explained.

It was removed at the beginning of the year at Manchester Royal Infirmary and he will now undergo two five-day treatments at Christie’s.

Mr Wilson said: “It was a bit of a surprise to find out I had cancer because there is no family history. All my family tend to have heart attacks in the middle of the night aged in their 70s, 80s and 90s.

“I wasn’t too upset when I was told the news. I just think you have to go with it and I see it as another step in life’s adventure.”

He had particular praise for the doctors and nurses who treated him following his diagnosis.

“All we see in the media is the things that are going wrong with the NHS and the tremendous work of the staff doesn’t make for great headlines,” he said.
