Justin Hawkins aims for Eurovision glory

Justin Hawkins, former frontman of glam rock band The Darkness, is bidding to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest.
The flamboyant singer and guitarist is one of six acts competing to represent the UK in this year’s competition.
Former East 17 star Brian Harvey and ex-Atomic Kitten Liz McClarnon will also be vying to take part. The other three contenders are hip-hop group Big Brovaz, pop quartet Scooch, and Cyndi, who is new to the UK Music scene.
Only one of the six acts will go to the Finnish capital, Helsinki, for the 52nd annual contest following a public vote in Eurovision: Making Your Mind Up.
Hawkins, who slipped into a downward spiral when the popularity of The Darkness started to wane, spending more than £150,000 on cocaine and being admitted into rehab, will take to the stage with singer Beverlei Brown.
As duo Hawkins And Brown, they will perform They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To, while former ’90s pop band singer Harvey will perform I Can.
Harvey will be hoping for more success after becoming one of the unluckiest figures in pop. He was sacked from the band when he appeared to condone Ecstasy use and recently fell under the wheels of his own car while driving.
Hawkins promised a spectacular visual event and said he decided to take part after having a dream. He said: “I had a dream that I should do it. I woke up with a really positive feeling about it. I think I’d got to the vote and then I woke up.”
He added: “It’s going to be a great night out at the end of the day. When you’ve enjoyed a long break it’s nice to hit back with something that is as big and as glamorous as they come. It’s my new ambition.
“Eurovision is something I’ve always wanted to do. It certainly isn’t two fingers up to The Darkness. It’s thumbs up to Europe. I’ll be going for Eurovision every year. I don’t care what it takes. I’ll be like Cliff Richard’s Christmas single. I’ll keep coming back.”
